This was one of many the protest activities against Marcos and his senseless killing of Ninoy. I was running then because I was pissed off!!! I hated Marcos!!! It was personal as much as it was political.

It really brought back a lot of memories in as much as it made me realize that much of what we fought for then are same struggles that Auntie Cory sacrificed so much for and to this day continue to plague us all.

The problems and issues are overwhelming. I believe they can't be solved during my generation and I fear my children's generation. Where does one begin or do you even bother to start anywhere at all? I used to say to myself forget it! I'll just live my life oblivious to all these problems as long as my family is happy and healthy.

It maybe divine intervention, or my dad and mom (possibly with Uncle Ninoy...GOD rest their souls) banging my head, that led me to be more involved with working with my brother Rapa in iamninoy. The idea of small "heroic" acts or being a hero in your own small way was a big eye-opener. A tiny act of goodness and kindness can impact many many lives in a huge way. And I guess, or I'd like to believe, this may be the same force that led my friends and I to form the iamninoy Runners.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 286px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/SpUfPblbY5I/AAAAAAAAAIo/a2FxHUb2qFA/s400/runners+group.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374236080299795346" />

The thought that by the simple act of running together we get to help kids have an education and a better crack at the future. This is why I'm running now. This time it's not political but what I consider as my personal stake at making a difference.

Run with me. Run with us!!!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 226px; height: 400px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/SpUfc71nVJI/AAAAAAAAAIw/9_zVwl439tM/s400/jamKRR2.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5374236312295920786" />

Crashed Into Uncharted Territory

Last Sunday, I ran the 15k Men's Health All-Terrain race in Sta. Elena. The course was both beautiful and challenging taking you through darting zigzags and rolling hills with nice views of the golf course and open fields.

I must admit though that I didn't expect the strain it would have on my knees. It was probably because I was constantly shifting while trying to choose where to step with constant thoughts of ACL in my mind. Unlike running on the road, I could not get a consistent rhythm on my strides. By the 8K mark my right knee was already painful perhaps for compensating for my left. Past the 12th I stepped on what I though was shallow mud but quickly realized I was wrong as I twisted my right ankle on a camouflaged rock. That's when I though, "Shit, I forgot to tape!" hahahaha. After a few more meters, I decided to call it a day and walked the remaining 2.5-3K to prevent any serious injury. I finished at a shameful, 1hr57mins. that Mayi, Caecilia, and Franics thought I got lost in the trail. hahahaha. Thanks for the vote of confidence guys.

This proved to be the right decision though because today, after 4 days of rest, ice, and arcoxia (hahaha), the pain in my knee is gone as well as the swelling on my ankle. There's still a little bit of stiffness and discomfort though but I think I'll be able to bike and swim this weekend and hopefully run next week.

At the end of the day, inspite of it all, I had a blast. Given the chance, if they'll have it again, I'll be back. But this time I won't be a fool and will come more prepared. Ay naku...lesson relearned.

Footnote: No pain nor strain felt in my hamstrings!!! Yessssss!!!

Back From the Dead

Last Sunday, June 14, I ran my first TRI race in over two years. I decided to join a mini-sprint so I can ease back into Triathlon with the least amount of stress possible.

I'd have to say I was so surprised with the amount of people who joined. Two years back, there was only a handful of participants. Now ang saya talaga. Saw a lot of old friends and training partners. I was also pleasantly surprised to see old friends who are first timers in the sport.

I had a blast and was really happy with my splits. SWIM 7:41; BIKE 31:47; RUN 17:20 for a total time of 56:48 minutes. I could have done much better though in my transitions. I was over 4 mins in my first and almost 2 mins in the second. But ok na din. Pwede pa pala. Forgot how much fun it is.

High point was my performance in my swim. I guess TI paid off and I had a more relaxed swim in spite of all the kicks received in the crowded pool.

Now, I think I just have to put a structure back in my training so I can be better prepared. For now I'm just happy to be back. I'm really lazy to post regularly. But I know I have to because I want to make sure I document everything so I can have accurate archives of my recovery, and now training, so I can look back at it if needed.

So here's whats been happening so far (in the past two weeks)

1. Run training with Joar have been really great! I've successfully gone through intervals, uphill and level speed work, tempo runs, and LSDs (Long Slow Distances -- coined by Joe Henderson) pain free. I'm happy and excited. If I can continue at this state, I will hopefully be able to work on improving time and do longer runs. I usually experience pain after the 11-12 km mark. So I'm still keeping my fingers crossed. I just have to be smart about training and know when to push and when to hold back.

2. I've started Total Immersion (TI) training with Coach Nonoy Basa. Together with classmates Joel Gironella and Miguel Pizarro, we have been battling to kill old-school swim habbits to achieve a better and more efficient swim technique. Easier said than done. Hahahaha. But I'm really enjoying it.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 262px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/ShH6z6vWzgI/AAAAAAAAAHw/VQl7Fvdhxiw/s400/TIclass.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337322803258904066" />
With Joel, Nonoy, and Miguel. Photo courtesy of theBullrunner (TBR)

3. Last Sunday, I decided to follow the advise of Jaymie (TBR) and coach Joar to finally get a deep tissue massage for my super stiff hamstrings. I've been putting this off since I haven't felt any serious pain in a while. But I yielded when warned that this stiffness might just eventually lead to a tear and another setback. Besides, I had nothing to loose by having the massage anyway.

As expected, it wasn't the ordinary Spa-like massage. Not relaxing at all. Harry, the masseur really worked on my problem areas namely -- my calf mussles, my hamstrings, and my right ITB.

I must say I was skeptical even after the massage. But I felt the benefits yesterday while doing hamstring exercises. I usually could not finish some exercise poses because they would start to stiffen up and become painful that I'd have to stop. But yesterday, they were ok. There was some slight stiffness but no pain. YES!!! Wow. Thanks Jaymie, Joar, and of course Harry!!!

4. I haven't been biking at all -- not even spinning. I have to squeeze it in somehow. "Makisig" will ride again!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 300px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/ShIBtLJgYKI/AAAAAAAAAH4/a8E5uCtjNgs/s400/jambike.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5337330383985860770" />

YES!!!

Last night, I went through a punishing interval routine with coach Joar pacing me. I was so tired I felt I was drunk. Hahahaha. It just confirmed the fact that I'm so out of shape. Oh well, the good side is I didn't feel any pain last night nor when I got up this morning. YEEEEEEEEESSSSSSS!!!!! Joar also gave me a really good stretch focused on my hamstrings. I believe that did the trick.

Small victory but extremely happy. Actually, I still experience stiffness from time to time but it's quickly solved after a good stretch. As far as I'm concerned, stiffness I can handle.

Now that I'm ok (or at least I think I'm ok), I believe it's time to get back to more serious training. Last week, I started training sessions again with my running coach, Joar. Last week was a fairly light session. Good workout, nothing fancy, still no pain. I believe though that today will be much different. So I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Going through a rigorous session with Joar and coming out of it pain-free will be such a milestone.

In addition, on Friday, I start my TI swim training with friends Joel Gironella, Miguel and Jaymie Pizarro under coach Nonoy Basa. I'm mixed feelings. I'm excited and anxious at the same time. Don't know how I'll do. I was never a strong swimmer and always struggled with it the most on Tri events. But I'm desperate. I need to be taught how to swim more efficiently and hopefully enjoy my it more. So let's see.

I'm glad though that I'm doing these things. I see it as progress and I like that. I go by what my friend Javy Olives (Tri'n Hard) told me, "jump in head first...bahala na". So I'm taking your advice Javy. Here goes...hopefully something. Build Schools! I am a Hero! IamNinoy!

A month and a half ago my brothers (Rapa and Jim) and I were discussing how we can further the spirit of the IamNinoy Campaign. IamNinoy aims to foster and nurture a new breed of heroes among the youth through simple selfless acts. Heroes in a big way or in a small way but more importantly in their own new way.

Together with my friends, Jake de Guzman and Drew Arellano, we brainstormed an idea to turn runners into “heroes”. And with the help of my wife Mayi and our other good friend Jaymie (TBR), LITERALLY A LOT OF HELP, we formally launched during the Condura Skyway run.

This is the IamNinoy Runners.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 330px; height: 209px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/SdnDrtsqfaI/AAAAAAAAAHo/cOEKCrH4Mhs/s400/iamninoy_runner_logobig.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5321499590483672482" />

Who are we?

“iamninoy Runners” is a group of professional and amateur runners affiliated with the iamninoy movement. Much has happened since. So this is my attempt to recap my continuing roller-coaster ride.

1. I did find a quick fix. And its effect or the relief it brought disappeared just as quick. Bwahahahaha.

2. I surrendered to the fact that there maybe no other solution to my hamstring problems except for plain old rest. But after a week, I got tired of resting (what a contradiction!) and was back on the road. I had a week of pain free short runs. Hooorayyyy!!! But when I started to push my speed a bit...I'm pushed back to the reality. Oh well.

3. I found a new freind in "Makisig". Makisig is my new spin bike which I got through my good friend Jake de Guzman. Jake also happens to be the one who introduced me to the punishing and fulfilling world of triathlon. Thanks Jake for both!

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 288px; height: 263px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/Sc7qrRchncI/AAAAAAAAAGI/6QpmGeOOEoI/s320/makisig.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318446239109455298" />

Spinning has been a good, pain-free alternative workout. Great also as a recovery workout in between long runs and intervals.

4. Having been too bothered by my hamstrings, I barely even noticed that I've completely recovered from my heel spurs. I think, no, I believe it was all the stretching and weights that did it. So, I'm planning to do the same for my hamstrings. I guess there really are no shortcuts. What am I talking about? I knew that! Tigas ulo lang. Hay naku.

5. I was "re-introduced" by my friend Drew Arellano to NIKE. I've had bad experiences with NIKE shoes (personal horror stories) and as a result have been loyal to other brands such as Mizuno, Adidas, and New Balance.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 360px; height: 270px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/Sc7rIHj75tI/AAAAAAAAAGQ/fyMwOVU03GE/s400/shoes.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318446734672389842" />

Drew convinced me to try a particular pair from Nike -- the Zoom Start, a light-weight cushoning shoe. Don't know what compelled me to buy. Perhaps its Drew's salesmanship. Hahaha. I ran with it, OUT-OF-THE-BOX, for 20K and have to admit that I was impressed.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 307px; height: 400px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/Sc7rhJGIUsI/AAAAAAAAAGY/AuzUDwHSLx4/s400/diego.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5318447164580975298" />

The shoe had a nice, snug, comfortable fit and provided a light and soft ride throughout the long run. No blisters, chafing, dead toe nails, and pain in my feet and knees. Good shoe. Thanks Drew!!!

6. I also did three weeks of long run routines (15 to 20 K) to prepare for the 21K Condura Skyway run. Have had good and bad runs but can say that more have leaned towards the good.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/Scyi8rEDaPI/AAAAAAAAAFo/KUcXaNeztNo/s320/cundurajam" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317804423253289202" />
Was relatively pain free nearing race day and have had an average time of 2hrs10. Good enough for me as long as I don't get hurt. But race day turned out to be a BAD run day! I think I ran faster than I should on the 1st half of the race. I clocked 51 mins on the first 10k and felt sudden intense shooting pain in my hamstrings past the 11th. From there, I walked and ran, and walked and jogged my way to the finish line. I was in pain but I was still HAPPY. My time, 2hrs25. Ok na din.

Photo courtesy of Rapa Lopa

7. Also during the Condura, together with 46 other runners, we launched the IamNinoy Runners Movement. I so happy and blessed to have had a chance to meet, run, and band together with a group of such selfless people. Thanks for joining our cause everyone.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/ScykiSDJXnI/AAAAAAAAAF4/wboZfYbdfu4/s400/jaymiepic" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5317806168885255794" />

Photo courtesy of theBullrunner

More about, IamNinoy Runners in my next post.

Looking for a Quick Fix

Last week, I tried to do some recovery runs to ease myself back to my usual training routine. I strained my hamstrings quite bad in the Happy Run and I wanted to quickly recuperate and start my training with Coach Joar.

On my first run, I just wanted to do an easy, 30-minute run. I started with a slow jog and immediately experienced some stiffness in my right hamstring. I thought, “Oh no!” But after about a kilometer into my run, my legs started to loosen up and the discomfort disappeared. As usual, impatience crept in and I started picking up my pace. In the end, my planned slow easy run became a 28-minute 5.5 km rolling hills run. And naturally, I felt the effects the following day. Payback!

So, I rested a day and tried to do a more controlled run on a treadmill. I figured, on a treadmill, I can watch over my speed and ensure that keep a steadier pace. Of course, boredom set in and I started messing with the speed of the treadmill turning my supposed easy run into an interval workout. Bad idea! After the 2nd interval, my hamstrings started to hurt that I could not regulate my stride. I decided to stop after 20 minutes and just give more time to stretch. But my hamstrings hurt so bad that I couldn’t even stretch. I felt pain and discomfort even as I sat while driving. That afternoon, I went to see Dr. George. He told me my hamstrings were so tight and he asked the therapists to do METS on me to align my pelvis and do release massage on my hamstrings. I walked out of the clinic relieved and pain free. I decided, I’ll rest over the weekend to give myself more time to recover.

Today, 4 days later, I decided to do a test run. And although the pain was not as intense, the stiffness was still there and at certain points in my run was shooting down to my shin. I could not shake it off.

This persistent hamstring problem is really irritating. I feel it’s impeding my progress and I’d give anything for a quick fix. HELP!!!

The Happy Runner

Yesterday, I had a great time participating in Drew Arellano’s Happy Run.

There’s nothing like running in a perfectly organized race. Congrats to Drew, Coach Rio and their team.

It was a great feeling being back in a race. The mixed feelings of anxiety and excitement give me such a high. It was nice to see old friends and meet new ones. I was also pleasantly surprised to see so many people running nowadays. I've also noticed that people perform at higher level and that there are more quality runners than before.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 400px; height: 300px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/SX5nvlMHHOI/AAAAAAAAAFI/DzZH2BtybQM/s400/IMG_0616.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295784278968704226" />
Picture courtesy of theBullrunner

I was extremely happy with my 15K time (1:30:46). It was a good comfortable run. And although it’s far from my old personal best, it’s what I can do now and I’m happy with it. :)

I also found myself running with a different race attitude. Before, I’d mark people throughout the race, do my best to out run them and move on to my next target. Yesterday, I chose people and used them as pace partners (especially on climbs). This way is definitely more fun!!!

I was especially proud to see my wife, Mayi, toughing out her ankle injury and still able clock in a good time. I usually pace her during long runs so I was worried about her running alone. Plus I also knew she was running injured. Seeing her in good form, going uphill on McKinley Hill, brought a smile to my face. Great job Mayi!!!

One bummer though were my hamstrings. They really hurt!!! They hurt during the race and was rather intense when I got home. But after a massage and a dose of a muscle relaxant plus an anti-inflammatory, I felt better. Not ok, but better.

Still, all things considered, I’d have to say Sunday's race was worth sacrificing Saturday night drinks. Hahahaha.

Happy Run : )

Calling all my runner friends!!! We ran a comfortable and steady pace throughout with only one 3 to 5 minute stop to do a quick banyo break and refill our hydration packs (the obvious setback having no water stations on route). We clocked in at 2-hours 35 mins. Not bad at all for her first time running that distance.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 235px; height: 320px;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/STzN3Yk7OsI/AAAAAAAAAEk/aNsxQP8kHv4/s320/mayi.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5277319214745205442" />
I’m really so proud of her. To think I couldn’t even convince her to run before on the road. In fact, I’ve past the one-year anniversary of my injury. A lot of things have happened in my road to recovery. I think it’s safe to say that my training has been met with challenges left and right. And although I knew it wasn’t going to be easy and that I was going to be a rollercoaster ride, I set a goal, bound by time and performance levels.

I said to myself that since my setback happened just before my 21K race last November, I should be able to run that same distance and clocking the same time as well. That then would be a perfect crown to my fitness goal.

But in my effort to do just that, I found myself suffering injuries left and right. I’m able to run the same distances with relative ease. But when I push my training to improve my time, BANG!, the injuries appear. Now on and off, I nurse hamstring strains and heel spurs.

I know my shortcomings. I know I have to be more religious with my strength/weight training and my stretching. I know I was taking short cuts to achieve my November goals. Now I’m suffering the consequences.

Now, I’ve shifted my mindset and have adjusted my goals. My focus now is to constantly work on improving my distance and stamina without getting injured. And when I know my body is ready, I will work on speed.

After all, fitness isn’t only measured through speed and distance but more importantly with the health of the athlete. ☺

Just Like The Movies

I’ve just returned from my trip to the US and Canada with my family. And as I promised Joar, my running coach, I squeezed in training runs even during my vacation.

Actually, I dreamed about running abroad (outside Manila and my usual routes) ever since being deprived of my opportunity to run in Melbourne. So I packed my running gear with me and took every chance I got to do my runs.

My first workouts were in Disneyland Hotel’s gym. This was nothing new to me as I did this the last time we were there in 2005. The gym still looks the same but noticeably equipped with new Cardio machines. More than what I can say for my gym in Manila. Hahaha. These workouts were fairly boring which I tried to make more interesting by running intervals at higher speeds and intensities.

From Los Angeles, we flew to Vancouver, Canada to board our ship for our Alaskan cruise. The cruise ship was a moving hotel and more. It literally had everything including a fully equipped fitness center on the very top which even offered pilates, yoga, and spin classes. Here, my runs were more interesting. I had to settle for the treadmills though as running open air on the deck was just too cold. The treadmills were situated facing the front of the ship, which offered a spectacular view of the ocean, the endless horizon, and at certain points mountains and icy glaciers.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/SEo8InoCQrI/AAAAAAAAACg/4ccPBcsxkwU/s320/alaska.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209042037780923058" />
On one instance, while I was on the bike, Mayi and the person next to her on the treadmill saw an Orca (Killer Whale) breach. Lucky lucky. Running on the ships treadmills though were equally interesting. It didn’t matter if you were just running flats, the bobbing ship constantly offered an inconsistent step and stride. It was like simulating a rolling hills run where you always had to mind your balance. Like I said, it was interesting and funny but quite challenging.

When our cruise ended, we docked back in Vancouver and stayed one more week with Whitey, my brother, in his house. He lived in a setting ideal for training. The sun sets at 9:30 pm and rises at 5:30 am, which gives you no excuse for not having time to exercise. His neighborhood is situated near a bike/run trail on a dike with a full view of the ocean and snow capped mountains on one side and pretty houses on the other.

While running, you feel a constant cool breeze and scents of pine and eucalyptus. Not to mention the occasional smell of steaks grilling on open barbecues of houses along the dike. You also come across bikers and runners throughout who greet and smile at you. Plus a bonus of seeing nesting eagles feeding their young.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/SEpAL2uE9OI/AAAAAAAAACo/cQY22cU0V24/s320/eagle.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5209046491418916066" />
On the very end of the trail, you end up in a park in a place called Steveston, a quaint community by the docks. During my recovery, a new realization popped into my mind and all I could say was..."Oh right, SHIT!!!"

So here it is. The latest addition to my list of Hard Realities I have to deal with.

Reality # 7. I've noted that I've been more focused on training for my run. And having come to realize the list of Hard Truths related to this, it occurred to me that I'll have to go through the same challenges and ordeal training for swimming and biking.

I tell you, the hits keep coming.

The Hard Truth

From my training sessions, I know my stride and technique has greatly improved but I also went face to face with some hard realities that I now know I have to deal with and work on.

Reality # 1. My stamina is shut and I’m a long, long, loooooooooooooong way from my fitness level before my injury.

Reality # 2. There is no short cut for building stamina. I knew this before, and I’m being reintroduced to it again. Shit!!!

Reality # 3. My goals should be refocused (in other words realistic. Hahahaha)
If I dare run races, I should not expect to clock in a good time.

Reality # 4. There is no escaping strength training. I know I’ll never get back if I keep putting off my weight training.

Reality # 5. No more excuses. I’m not injured anymore. I can train as hard as I need to train. It’s all up to me!!! Yikes

And last and maybe most important of all.

Reality # 6. I will have to do all of the above handicapped with the obvious reality that I will not give up my social life. To be more specific,...drinking and late night gimmicks with family and friends. Oh well, life goes on and the struggle continues.

All Clear

Like a good soldier and patient, I went to see George again for a check up last week, April 3, 2008. We agreed last Feb 28, that I should go back after a month so he can check my progress once more.

Finally, after months of rehab, George gave me my clearance, ahead of schedule. YAHOOOOOOOOO!!!! This means I can do anything I want including badminton.
It felt great! I was like last day of class….GRADUATION at last.

George reminded me though to continue my weight/strength training in the gym. He noticed that I was slacking with that part of my therapy and he was correct. I was going once a week instead of the recommended three times a week. It showed and honestly, I felt it too. My legs and knees would feel weak during more intense workouts and I would feel occasional pain and strain in my quads, hamstrings and knee. So I promised myself to be more disciplined and diligent on this aspect. I don’t want to be stupid and regret the consequences of my negligence and laziness. NO MORE DELAYS!!!

The Kind of Pain I’m Used To

Since having been allowed by George last month to proceed with training, I’ve enlisted the services of a running coach to put some structure on that particular discipline. So since March 5, 2008, I’ve included running drills and interval training to my tempo and long runs.

Having someone pushing you and challenging you does bring you to a higher level of training. Plus I get the benefits of an experienced and accomplished runner correcting my stride and my technique. I must admit that it’s quite exhausting at times but it’s the kind of pain I’m used to and the kind of pain I like. Pain is good when you know you’ve accomplished something or you’ve overcome a challenge.

Big Leap

Last week, I suddenly felt that stinging pain again on the side of my knee. I haven’t felt this in a long time and it annoyed me that it’s there again and that it came when I had toned down my workouts for fear that I might be pushing too hard. You can just imagine how pissed I was that this happened again.

I’ve decided that the only way to rid myself of these fears and get some piece of mind was to see Dr. George and ask him my questions directly. So, I went last Feb 26, 2008 to his clinic and had myself examined. George went through the whole routine and told me that my knee is doing really well and that I can start running and biking outdoors already. I was so shocked that it took a while for me to remember the list of things I wanted to ask him. Quickly I threw all my questions and here is essentially a summary of his answers.

1. I can run and bike outdoors at my own pace at any distance.
2. More than watching out for a distinct pain, I supposed to watch out for swelling in my knee. If this happens, I should just lessen my intensity and the distance I cover and apply ice on my knee.
3. The stinging pain I felt on my knee was still connected to my hamstring which according to George was where he got the ligament to fix my injury
4. Strength training is very important
5. Equally important, I can start stretching already. Any stretch (without resistance) is OK
6. I can’t swim especially where I have to use my legs.
7. If everything OK, I may be back training for Triathlons in a month.

I was so happy and excited as I told Mayi the news. The following day, I put on my gear and ran my first 10 k on the road. It felt great. The funny part was that it was my right knee that hurt and felt some strain. Perhaps I was unconsciously compensating for my left knee or maybe it became a little weak as much of my strength training was focused on my injured knee. But all in all it was fantastic and it’s nice knowing that I’m doing this with George’s GO signal.

Since then, my run and bike workouts are more regular and I've also doubled my strength training routines.

Running Scared

It has dawned on me that while I continue to try to keep my workouts and progress on schedule by keeping my intensity level up, I also have a feeling that I am being pulled back by constant fears lingering in my head. Often, while running, biking, or even doing weights, I’ bombarded with questions in my mind of whether I’m doing the right thing or not. Questions like, “Am I going too fast or too slow?”, “Is my form OK?”, “Can I do More?”, “Can I start stretching already?”, etc.

It’s hard enough working back into fitness. It just makes it worse dealing with these self-imposed issues in my head.

• Footnote – This is a delayed post that should have been published weeks ago.

Throwing Caution to the Wind

Since Australia, my runs, on the treadmill, have been regular 30-35 minute routines. I’ve also experimented with changing my speed, which Dr. George allows anyway. My runs are always followed by a 30-minute stationary bike workout to further add to my strength training. This was actually how I regularly train before my injury, with far less intensity of course this time around.

Since I got back from Australia a week and a half ago, I’ve been so busy trying to catch up with my office work and as a result have found it so difficult to find time to exercise. In fact, I’ve been only able to go the gym 3 times to do my strength training including my run and bike workouts. Today, I had a late morning meeting in my schedule so I had a tiny window where I felt I could squeeze in a run. The problem was, it was so tight that I had no time to travel to the gym and was only left with the alternative of running on the road, in the village. The debate went on again in my mind whether to go through with it or not. I knew there might be consequences but my desire to run was greater so I went ahead and did my first run on the road.

I chose a relatively easy route. I ran a straight line a much as I can and tried to prevent any lateral steps. I also controlled my speed and my stride throughout the run but with great difficulty. The urge to go faster, run my normal stride, and attack the uphill slopes was always there especially when I became comfortable with my run around my 3rd minute. But common sense persevered this time around. At the end of it all, when I completed my route, I clocked a total of 37 minutes. I’m sure I didn’t cover a considerable distance given my speed but I felt really great. I had neither pain nor stiffness in my knee. I wasn’t tired at all but had a good workout just the same.

Though it felt great to hit the road again, I don’t think I’m not going to do this regularly until I get George’s GO signal. I’m counting my blessings. I didn’t get injured. My knee didn’t hurt. And I was able to experience “runners high” again after a long, long time.

For now, I can use this feeling to stimulate my boring runs on the treadmill. Hahahaha.

My Alternative Workout

Let me begin by saying that this post is long overdue. I was supposed to post this while I was still in Australia but I was enjoying myself so much that it seemed foolish to waste my time posting my blog.

Anyway, the last time I did write, I was debating whether I should run on the road (instead of the hotel gym) given the fact that Melbourne outdoors were really spectacular. Well, I decided to be more sensible as I didn’t want to risk any unnecessary injury by not following doctor’s orders. In addition, Mayi already felt terrible for accidentally leaving her running shoes so I decided to sympathize with her. Instead, we did long walks (7 to 10 kms a day). It was perfect as we got to see more of the sites and get our doze of daily exercise – two birds with one stone!

Here are some snapshots taken from our walks.

To Run or Not to Run

I’m proud to report that since I started to include running in my workouts, my exercises have been more regular and I’ve also managed to consistently increase my performance. Ah yes, progress.

I’m now out of the country enjoying a break and living out a dream come true. I’m in Australia with Mayi and my in-laws to watch the Australian Open. As I mentioned, it’s been my dream to watch sports events/tournaments at this level. I get a boost of inspiration watching and admiring these top class athletes. And to get a chance to see them live, oh wow. Thanks Pappy!

Anyway, two days before my departure, I decided not to workout anymore. I had to rush and finish all my work before leaving and I didn’t want to risk any form of injury that would eventually spoil my dream trip. After all, I figured, I can catch up on my workout while I’m there. I already checked the hotel’s website and they do have a full gym and spa.

While here in Melbourne, I can’t begin to express how beautiful this city is. Our hotel, Hilton at the park, is walking distance from the Australian Open playing courts. It’s also surrounded with two huge parks with slopping bike and running trails. The moment Mayi and I saw them, we looked at each other and said, “oh my God, how perfect.” My dilemma though is, should I go against George’s instructions and run on the road or just stay within the confines of the gym and the boring treadmill?

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/R5GkP0x-b_I/AAAAAAAAACQ/WV79rt_8d28/s320/parkcopy.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5157083640089178098" />

After much debate in my mind, I did the more rational decision and ran in the gym. I didn’t want to risk it. Instead, I opted to run longer and faster and finish off with a bike routine. It was ok. I left the gym satisfied. And I know there will be other opportunities. Who knows, I just might give it a go before I fly back to manila. Hahahaha.

Surprise! Surprise! Surprise!

Two days ago, Jan 8, 2008, I decided to see George for a check-up. I figured, I’d see him before I started my workouts anew and also get an inclination of the measure of progress of my knee in his expert opinion. As he proceeded with examining my knee, I went about telling him how bad I was during the holidays. George just smirked and gave me the “Yup, I knew were going to do that” look. I figured better to be honest and tell him everything and face the consequences. Anyway I was resigned to the fact that my partying during the holidays probably cost me a delay of one month in my recovery. So by that count, I’ll be running on March instead of February. After his examination, George looked at me and gave me the big surprise. He said, “Ok, you can start running already.” I couldn’t believe it. I had to ask him at least three more times. Wow.

After clarifying what I can and can’t do as far as running is concerned, I announced to my therapists that Doc gave me the GO signal to run. They were as surprised as I was and they cheered me on as I walked out of the clinic door.

The following morning, I went to the gym excited as hell. I went through my strengthening workout religiously as George reminded me how important it was now that I was going to start running already. He also told me to do heavier weights to further build the strength in my legs and knees, so I did.

As I stepped on the treadmill, there were a million thoughts on my mind. I was telling myself, “You’re finally going to run again” but at the same time, I was also telling myself, “Take it easy”. For my first run, I ran for 15 minutes as George prescribed. The first 5 minutes was crazy but fun. I was constantly analyzing my strides, feeling my knee, and trying to catch a pattern for my breathing. I think I was still in disbelief that I was running. The next 5 minutes was tougher. I was catching my breath as if I was already on my 5th kilometer. However, by the time I reached my 12th minute, I got my step back and got both my rhythm in my breathing and my stride. It felt good that by the time I reached 15 minutes, I wanted to run more. But I was quick to tell myself, “Enough”. So I just settled for the stationary bike instead.

Today, Jan 10, 2008, I was back in the gym again for another round. I felt so high; I just had to go back. Anyway, I wasn’t going to try anything fancy. I just did exactly the same routine as yesterday. Today was even better. I ran with a consistent stride and did not feel the fatigue as yesterday. But I also kept a comfortable pace both in my run and my bike as didn’t want to risk overdoing it.

I’m so happy! This for me is big progress. I figured I just have to keep my mindset of being disciplined and patient and just focus on strengthening rather than endurance and I’ll be on my way. I feel great!!!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://pinoy-try-athlete.blogspot.com/2008/01/surprise-surprise-surprise.html' title='Surprise! I’m even ashamed to say the amount of partying (therefore drinking and pigging out) I indulged in over the holidays.

My brief shinning moment was my workout on Christmas Eve. I went to the gym, did my full routine including cardio work and an upper body workout. But that was it. I have not exercised aside from spurts of heel raises, squats or hamstring curls. Other than that, nothing!

The devil made me do it! Hahahaha

Although to my surprise, I still feel my knee getting stronger. I experience the shooting pains much less as well as the stiffness in my knee. My swelling has decreased considerably and I’m starting to see the “cuts” back on my legs. The only part that’s slow to improve though is my hamstring. It is still far from normal, using my right leg as my benchmark. I guess there are no shortcuts there and that I really have to seriously get back to working out.

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_Ev7wUC7tkUE/R4W5eEx-b-I/AAAAAAAAACI/9mb6s2LVocA/s320/LEGS.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5153729274925969378" />

My resolve hasn’t diminished though. I’m still aiming for the dates that George and I set. My goals remain and I know reaching them is all up to me.

Beyond My Control?

This was a bad weak in terms of therapy and workouts. I think I only went to the gym once and didn't even do the exercises at home. This week was wall-to-wall meetings and Christmas parties. So naturally, none stop drinking as well.

Oh. I failed to mention that Dr. George also allowed me to have a few drinks already, provided that I keep it to a minimum and see to it that it doesn't aggravate the swelling in my knee. Well, so far the swelling has not come back so I've been having more drinks than I think George would allow me to have. At this time of the year, it's really beyond my control. Hahahaha

Tomorrow though, I promised myself I'd go back to my usual routine in the gym. And since the next week's workload will be relatively light, I can have more time for exercise. Of course, there will still be a lot of parties and therefore a lot of drinking. So, let's see which one is stronger, will power or temptation. I'll keep you posted...

Back On The Saddle

The past week, as expected, was another roller coaster ride of sorts. From the time of my last post, it took me three more days before I actually set foot on the gym. It wasn’t for lack of enthusiasm to go. This time, I was just so busy with work; it was impossible to squeeze it in. I was also probably the longest stretch, since I started therapy, that I’ve been without any form of workout or exercise. Paranoia started creeping in again such that I thought I was regressing without my usual drills.

Finally, on Saturday, Dec. 8, 2007, I walked back into the gym. The first person I saw was my friend and trainer, Joms. I showed him my battle scars from the operation and we discussed the program given by the clinic as well. I didn’t have a session with him though. I thought, I’d try to do the routine myself first and get a feel of things. I found the usual exercises a bit tougher since I was working with real weights now as resistance. But the drills were less than what I was asked to perform in the clinic so that allowed me to give it more effort. The funny part was that I still did 250 reps each on my leg presses and leg/hamstring curls only to find out that I was supposed perform just three 20 rep sets each. It’s funny now after the fact; but I guarantee you, I wasn’t smiling while I was doing it. My legs were really burning. In fact, I called the clinic the day after to ask my therapists if I was doing anything wrong. As they were correcting me, they thought I was crazy as they could probably imagine how I struggled but still forced myself to finish. Since then, I’ve gone back to the gym two more times. My routines are smoother now and I’m beginning to enjoy myself again. Today, Joms introduced an upper body workout routine as well. Now I’m looking at a full body workout!

I should mention though that the constant highlight is my lone cardio workout. I’ve mentioned in my past blog that I’m now allowed to use the stationary bike. It’s far from ridding on the road or even a spin class but right now it’s pure heaven for me. I miss biking (and running) so much that I really look forward to this part of my workout. In fact, it’s more a challenge for me controlling my brain to stop myself from pushing too hard. A lot of times I get the urge to speed up or increase the resistance. I constantly have to tell myself, “Stick to what’s allowed and be patient. You’ll get to that phase eventually.”

I’ve set a new goal to help me manage mindset. I tell myself, “The goal is to strengthen my knee further and not to work on building my fitness.” Not yet at least. hahahaha

But it really feels great being back in the gym. I feel it’s a big step forward. I’m back to things I’m used to doing. I’m back to seeing old friends as well.

Rollercoaster Emotions – December 5, 2007

Yesterday I was on Cloud 9!!! George finally gave me the GO signal to proceed with my gym workouts. Actually, there still are mandatory strengthening drills for my knees, ankles, and legs but at least it incorporates an aerobic workout (a stationary bike). I gave my “high-fives” and bid my goodbyes to everyone in the clinic. I will really miss them. I really owe them a lot.

I arrived home and announced to Mayi that I’m done with my clinic therapy sessions. I’m a “graduate”. “I’ll be in the gym first thing tomorrow”, I added. I guess she could see how excited I was. I really couldn’t wait ‘til the next morning.

This morning, as I woke up, I went through the usual routine of getting my boys up and ready for school. Lucas, with some effort, got up and proceeded to his room. Diego on the other hand took a little bit more time getting up. I thought he was just a bit lazier getting up with the gloomy weather this morning. Until he told Mayi and I that his leg really hurts. Apparently, it started to hurt just before he went to bed. This morning, he couldn’t walk and was limping really bad. It was so bad, he looked the way I looked just when I had my injury. I struggled trying to figure out what happened to him but he could not also tell me what caused it. Poor boy, I think I made him more nervous with all my questions. I was groping for an answer and never got one.

All of a sudden, I was tried. I wasn’t tired physically; I was mentally and emotionally exhausted. My enthusiasm for the gym disappeared just like that! Mayi was practically forcing me to go to the gym. I told her I couldn’t. I was just drained.

I really hate it when any of my kids are sick and I can’t do anything about it. I hate feeling helpless and I can’t fight back. I didn’t know how to react except to get frustrated and angry. I couldn’t help myself. Aside from not going to the gym, I pigged out on a very heavy breakfast to have some sort of outlet. It's so not me. I was being a brat. I knew I shouldn’t react that way but I couldn’t help myself. After a while, I said sorry to Mayi. I guess the stress I felt when Diego got sick a week and a half ago was still fresh in my mind.

I know that like all things, this too shall pass. I just wish that it passed quickly.

As for my enthusiasm for the gym, the next stage in my recovery? .........Tomorrow is a new day.

The Week That Passed

The past week went on as expected with daily therapy drills either done at home or in the clinic. In the clinic, Gimbo always looked to challenge me, which I really appreciated. It presented a new measure of progress by adding a degree of difficulty in some of my exercises. It also actually worked for me, as it was a good break from the monotony of the routines of my two-week extension.

I would still feel on and off pain especially when my knees are really tired. There is still a bit of swelling around my knee. And from time to time, stiffness in my knee and hamstrings would still bother me. This time though, I’ve come to accept that these are all part of the whole healing process. Plus in spite of this, I know that I go through my sessions with relative ease. And that for me is another sign of progress.

Complete Reversal

Wow! Yesterday, I did my drills with relative ease. My heel slides were easy and at certain points went beyond full ROM mark. I also went through with my other exercises with little difficulty. There was almost no feeling of stiffness other than the normal strain you feel when doing workouts. I was pleasantly surprised and feeling high.

I guess, just like running or biking, you go through good and bad days. I had a tough time days earlier, now it’s the complete opposite. So I figured, that should my mindset.

Just as Lance Armstrong said, “…Some days it hurts more than others. But it doesn’t mean I don’t do it. I deal with it…because not everything that is good for you, always feels good for you.”

Impatience Creeping In

Since starting on this two week extension, I’ve found myself struggling with a demon I know all too well…IMPATIENCE. It happens to me a lot specially when doing long runs. I get so impatient that I start breaking my pace and get unnecessarily exhausted. Then after my run, I think to myself, “that was stupid.”

Now, I’m only on my third day (of the two week goal) and already there’s a constant seesaw battle mentally and physically. There are moments when I feel I’m struggling do things I’ve been able to achieve so easily. For instance, my hamstrings seem so stiff that they are preventing me from reaching full range of motion (ROM) on my knee bends. I also noticed some swelling again and it’s driving me nuts. Plus, there are certain movements where I feel shooting pains on my knee. This feeling has disappeared a long time ago and now it’s back. It’s so frustrating!

Yesterday, I called the clinic and asked if I could do my therapy there. I knew I could do it at home. I did it the other day. But yesterday, I needed motivation or maybe I just needed company. Of course they were nice enough to accommodate me. Gimbo, patiently assisted me through the drills and although I struggled, I did everything really well. I was able to bounce back.

Today was bad again. Pain and swelling in my knee is back. My hamstrings feel so stiff again and so on. I’m beginning to feel that two weeks is so far away. I decided to just rest today and on hindsight am not even happy about that decision.

It’s difficult because I have no way of measuring any real progress because I’m able to do everything that’s needed. I just feel I’m stuck doing this boring routine until I finish the two weeks.

I’m going crazy. I know I need to refocus. But today, I just can’t. I just want to run or bike. Or I just want alcohol. Shit I can’t even have that. Oh well.

The Verdict (Part 2) – Nov 20, 2007

Today marks exactly one month since my operation. After 4 weeks of therapy, I was ready for the “next phase”. So I went to see Dr. George in his clinic today to get his GO signal. And the verdict was…too fast, too soon...two more weeks.

I did mention in my earlier post that there is a chance that George might just extend my sessions before allowing me to proceed with my gym workouts. That’s exactly what happened.

He explained to me that he wanted to give it two more weeks to ensure that my muscles and knee were strong to handle the workout regimen in the gym. He was concerned that I might push myself too hard, over do things, and injure myself all over again. I must say that George knows me too well and he’s absolutely right. I will push myself and push hard. Hey, that’s exactly what I was doing this past month. Oh well, as I said, he really knows best and I will follow everything he says to the dot.

So, with his instructions, my therapists gave me my program with slight variations on some of the exercises. By variations, I mean harder versions! Hahaha. I’m supposed to do these everyday in the house but I told my friends in the clinic not to be surprised if I pop-up and do it there some days. It’s nice having them around motivating you and laughing with you along the way.

So here I go. Not the “next phase” I wanted or expected but still a next phase. Two weeks, a new milestone.

4th week (12th session) Nov 19, 2007 – To the MAX

I did it! Yesterday, I completed the last session of my 4th week and as expected did all the drills to the MAX. My therapists required nothing less. I was doing maximum reps and maximum resistance on all the drills. I’m also able to reach full range on my knee bends.

My therapists and I feel I’m ready to do gym work already. Of course, the final say would be Dr. George. I’m seeing him this afternoon and hopefully I’ll get his GO signal! I was warned though that there’s a chance that he might extend my sessions. At first, I thought, that would be really upsetting. But I kinda figured he would know best. And, actually, I’m happy with what I’ve achieved so far. What I actually mean is, per my schedule, I’m supposed to complete a 4-week or 12 session cycle then George will examine me and hopefully allow me to start gym workouts with new programs. This for now is my latest milestone or my “major” short-term goal.

So, together with my therapists, I tried to max out all the drills. And, true to form I did everything they asked and gave every exercise 110% effort. I’m almost at full range with my knee bends/slides. I’m so ready for my last session and ready to complete all the drills to the max. Hahaha, it’s like I’m trying to prepare myself for a race.

Today though, I woke up with my knee feeling stiff. First I was upset thinking, setback again. But I quickly refocused and said, “I’m just tired from yesterday. It will feel better after I ice it.”

Yesterday was extraordinary. Aside from my maxed out session during therapy, I was also walking a lot doing errands the whole day. My son, Diego has been sick so I had to bring him to the doctor for a check-up. He was feeling so weak that he asked me to carry him. I know it was extra load on my knee but I really didn’t have a choice. I just thought, “hmmm….workout….hahahaha”. After, I moved around a little bit more to buy his medicines. Then, I dropped him home and went for my therapy. So, on hindsight, my knee has every reason to be tired.

But, it feels better now after the ice. I’m able to walk and do the stairs again painlessly. The stiffness is gone. I’m back on track.

4th week (10th session) Nov 14, 2007 – Pain vs. Progress

Today I was eager to come to therapy and begin the first session of what is supposed to be my last week. Actually, to be more precise, this meant last week in the clinic after which will be the start of therapy workouts in the gym. I think even my therapists were as enthused as they began by telling me that we were going to try to max out all the exercises. I like that. I like the challenge.

And true to form, I improved on all of the drills and managed to squeeze in new ones. This rounds up my accomplishments for this session:
1.    Step-ups increased to 200 diagonal and 100 straight
2. Three and a half minutes on the wobble board
3. Added more resistance and reps on my hamstring curls and Legs presses
4. Wall squats were 60 and 90 degree sets plus an additional set of one leg squats on my bad leg (with elastics as resistance).
5. My ankle slides now reached 139 degrees. Only 6 degrees to go!!

I’m really happy with my accomplishments. But these didn’t come without the accompanying pain. I’ve come to realize that pain and progress go hand in hand. What motivates me through the pain though is another thing that Marianna shared with me which I realized was so true as far as all these aches and pain that come with recovery are concerned. She said, “Uncle Jam don’t worry, once the pain goes away, it will not come back”.

Now, I’ve cut down my goals to even smaller and achievable targets. It helps me cope with my impatience when I sometimes get hit with the realization that even the February seems so far away. It triggers a string of negative thoughts and a barrage of “what if?” questions. It drives me crazy. So, having smaller more attainable goals allow me to enjoy small victories that are enough for me chew on and move forward.
So even these tiny improvements during therapy are a big boost. This mindset actually works for me.

By the way, I was allowed to not use my immobilizer already! I've been waiting to achieve this milestone. Upon leaving the clinic, I cautiously tried walking normally. Although it felt weird and wobbly at first, I slowly got my groove and rhythm back. The feeling was ten times rewarding when I reach home and climbed the stairs normally. I looked crazy as I went up and down the stairs several times trying to shake off my disbelief. It was a great feeling.

3rd week (9th session) –Nov 12, 2007

Like a good soldier, I did all my exercises and drills during the weekend. I always think that if I slack, I will loose what I’ve gained so far and delay everything. I’m really paranoid. It’s my nature. Last night, in Pasay, Marianna told me that she doesn’t experience pain anymore. She goes through the drills with ease. She actually walks normally already. I’m so envious but I’m happy for her.

Today, during therapy, I did my usual 3rd week routine drills with slight variations. I did more reps for my step-ups (150 diagonal and 50 straight). I also added another 2 minute set, balancing on my bad leg, but this time using an uneven platform (wobble board). In addition, I used a stiffer elastic for my hamstring curls and increased reps to 150. Plus I did leg presses today and was able to reach 130 degrees already! PROGRESS! I love it.

3rd week (8th session) – Nov 9, 2207

I’m really happy because now I’m a consistent 120 degrees and I’ve been able to add weights and reps to my exercises. Heel slides were against the wall, squats against the wall (30 and 60 degrees), balancing on my bad leg, and diagonal step ups using my bad leg as well. They also increased the reps for my leg curls from 50 to 100 which is really the pits as my hamstring muscles really hurt. I feel like I have more than a dozen rips on my hamstring. It’s really painful. Although I take comfort from the fact that George says it’s normal and that my progress is actually so fast compared to others. So, I use that thought whenever I feel the pain and the anxiety of not being able to exercise. I just think to myself, “so much progress in two week...just think of how you’ll be at the end of the month”.

Oh by the way, I was able to reach 120 degrees on my heel slide today! I’d stretch at night and it happens. I’d reach for something and I’d get it. I was so sure I re-injured myself. I said, oh no, that’s it, the road just became longer. I felt so low. I asked Marianna if she experienced this too. She said she did so I tried not to make it bother me. Although it got to a point were it hurt really bad that I decided to see George and ask him personally.

George explained that these were normal as my muscles are slowly moving back into position and as I am staring to use them again in therapy. He also explained, in detail, what he did in the operation. It was a real eye opener and it put me at ease. The great thing about my visit to George was his observation that my progress seemed really fast. He was so enthusiastic about it but was quick to warn me to follow everything that they tell me to do as much as not try anything I’m not allowed to do.

I’m ok with that. As far as I’m concerned, George saying that I’m really doing well and better that expected was more than what I needed. My morale is recharged and my motivation is back.

2nd week of therapy (4th to 6th session)

Now I have my routine plus a mindset to go with it. My therapy, replaced my workouts and I was performing them with the same discipline and focus. That made it a lot easier to deal with. I’d still feel a lot of pain in varying degrees and places in my leg. I was constantly comparing notes with Marianna (GOD bless her) and communicating with my therapists. I wanted to understand that what I was feeling was normal and that I was not injuring myself further. I was pushing myself but wanted to make sure that I was not over doing it. It actually went well as George noticed that I didn’t swell that much as such did not required to be aspirated. Apparently, most cases swell really bad that they needed to be aspirated with needles to drain their knees of fluids and blood. Thank GOD. Trade off to my not swelling though is this huge blister (as big as a bottle cap) that George popped. To this day, the mark it left is far bigger than any of the scars I sustained from the actual operation. Oh well, you can’t have everything.

Since, I didn’t have swelling, George asked if I wanted to start therapy already (I could have also started two days later). But I thought, why delay? Let’s get on with it because I was really set on achieving those milestones. I really wanted to get back already.

So we began our first set of exercises, which apparently was going to be my routine for the next three sessions (1st week of therapy). I actually did really well. I responded well and was able to perform the drills faster than expected. It made me realize though that what they were asking me to do were such simple leg and knee exercises. For example, I was only expected to bend my knee to 90 degrees 50 times. They were a far cry from the workouts I was used to but the effort level was comparable. I thought, this is going to be a long 4 months but at least I’m on my way.

D’Day – October 20, 2007

The day finally came. Mayi accompanied me to St. Luke’s Medical early in the morning. George managed to squeeze me in and gave me a slot. I was really grateful; I was 1st of 3 ACLs he was going to do that day.

The operation went smoothly. For some reason, I woke up and got a chance to watch what George was doing through a monitor. Actually I couldn’t really tell what was going on. I looked pretty much like watching a show on National Geographic. Anyway, George was done in 30 minutes plus another 20 minutes to sew me up. I was brought to the recovery room for what possibly was the most boring 3 hours of my life. Luckily, they allowed me to have my cellphone so I had some for of entertainment, a distraction of sorts. It didn’t distract me though from the pain I was experiencing. It felt like someone was twisting my leg, trying to break it again. And to add to that, it also felt like I had a heavy cabinet on top of my leg.

At around lunchtime, they wheeled me in a room where Mayi met me with my Burger King lunch! Yahoo! I was so hungry. It was perfect, Mayi was beside me plus a TV to entertain me. I begged the nurse not to bring me back to the recovery room. Fortunately, she agreed and I stayed there until I was given the GO signal to go home.

Before going, George gave me final instructions, most painful of which was NO ALCOHOL for the next two months. I thought at first that he was joking. But after asking several times if he was serious, it figured he was. Oh well, I can live with it. I thought all I have to put in my head is that, if I don’t follow his instructions, it will delay my recovery. And I didn’t want that. Besides, it’s just another milestone to aim for and I will be able to drink in time for Christmas and New Year!

The next 24 hours were not any less painful. The feeling I described earlier was consistent and sustained. Ice offered some sort of relief. And thank GOD for pain killers.

My family would call and text me. Telling them how painful it was offered some sort of outlet for me. GOD bless all of them for their support especially Marianna, my niece, who acted as my support group. She also just tore her ACL and is on the road to recovery. I must say though that I could not have done it without Mayi. She was my nurse, my secretary, and the constant ear for all my complaints. Thank you so much Mom.

Oh well. First step is done. However painful, I happy I’m on my way! Now, on to therapy!

The Verdict – October 18, 2007

Thursday came and as soon as George examined me, he immediately determined that it was a torn ACL. We went through a long discussion of what options I could take. He said that if I wanted to continue with my active lifestyle, he would recommend that I go through with the operation to repair the damage. I told him, that I definitely want to be able to still do my triathlon and play badminton as well. I just felt that even if I don’t do it on a competitive level, I’d still want to be able to set and achieve goals as I train and keep my fitness intact. That’s essentially how I train, I only recognize one competitor, myself. And in that sense, I still am looking to compete and succeed.

George added that if we operate, I can be back doing triathlon in 4 months and badminton in 6. I just put in my mind that for now these will be my new goals, my visible milestones. So with that, I decided, LET’S DO IT!!!

I happened in a "Snap".

A day after my 42nd birthday, I tore my ACL (Anterior Cruciate Ligament). I was playing badminton with my wife, Mayi, and my brothers on one of our routine weekly games. We were just on our first game when I instinctively (short of saying…What the hell was I thinking?) decided to jump and smash the ball. Upon landing, I felt my knee buckle and twist. I heard a popping sound and instantly felt the pain. I fell to the floor as Mayi, Joel, and Kwi ran towards me to see what had happened. They thought I’d sprained my ankle but I told them that it was my knee as I winced in pain. Shit, it hurt like hell and it’s a feeling of pain I will remember for the rest of my life.

Joel called our good friend Dr. George Canlas right away to tell him what had happened. I was advised by George to immobilize my knee and see him Thursday in his clinic. He also prescribed medicines for the pain and swelling.
